When Karen Vladeck left the practice of law in 2021 after 13 years as a litigator to become a recruiter, she asked her then-law partners if she could stay on as an Of Counsel in case the whole recruiting thing didn’t work out. Within the first week, it became clear that Karen had found her place in the ecosystem of the law: connecting lawyers to the best possible role for them, both professionally and personally. And spoiler alert: She never practiced law again.

In 2024, Karen launched Risepoint Search Partners with the dream of creating a company that lawyers turn to when they’re ready to make their next move and want to do it with recruiters who are genuinely good people, working tirelessly to make the search process as seamless as possible. Like any new role, going out on her own was a little daunting. But she followed the advice she’s been telling herself her entire career (and that she often gives her candidates): If you don’t bet on yourself, no one else will.

this is karen

She still holds multiple Brookline Dolphin Swim Team records from the 1990s (which her mother frequently checks on to make sure they are still standing).

She is a graduate of Cornell University and the University of Miami School of Law but rarely wears red or orange.

She’ll never give up her 617 area code even if she hasn’t lived in Boston in 20+ years.

Despite not being a particularly fast runner, she has completed multiple half marathons (as well as one, and very likely only, full marathon).

Her husband is a law professor at Georgetown University Law Center and they share two mostly sweet, sometimes feral daughters (and one very lovable elderly pug).

THE DEETS

I became a recruiter because I truly believe in my heart that there is a place in the law for everyone who wants it. And that most people (especially women) leave the practice of law when they aren’t valued at their place of employment. I wanted to help change that.

WHY ARE YOU A RECRUITER?

I would grant myself the power of sleeping on airplanes. Imagine how amazing it would be to fall asleep the second the plane took off and wake up at your destination. Is my “exhausted mom of two” showing?

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I wake up in Northern Vermont on a summer day that’s a crisp 58 degrees. I am hand-delivered a perfectly made coffee in bed. My kids are still asleep, so I lie in bed for an hour reading a new book. I then take a run or walk outside by myself (kids are somehow still asleep… this is a perfect day, not a realistic one).

As the sun warms up the lake, my husband, two girls and I spend the day boating, napping, and eating great food, cooked by anyone but me.

In the evening, a sitter takes the kids and my husband and I head out for a perfect meal at a local, hidden-gem restaurant that is both somehow amazing and not too crowded. Then I’m back in bed before 10:00 pm.
